Services

MPL is a large and progressive regional laboratory currently providing anatomic pathology services for an expanding list of clients throughout Texas, Arkansas, and Florida. Keenly aware that physicians have a choice in laboratories, MPL is committed to providing the highest level of service to the clients we serve. Our physicians welcome the opportunity to consult one-to-one on individual cases. Additionally, MPL is staffed by a subspecialty boarded Pathologist with a wealth of experience in all aspects of surgical pathology and cytopathology.

Cytology

Paps are read by a board certified Cytotechnologist trained in the proper methods for screening the conventional pap test, ThinPrep® Pap Test and SurePath™ Pap Test. The average tenure for our Cytotechnologists is eighteen years and while working closely with our Pathologist, they have developed a scope of knowledge and experience that provides our clients with a great level of confidence.

Histology

The average tenure of our board certified Histotechnologists spans twenty years. Our internal experience, combined with our continued support for our employee development program and for maintaining state of the art laboratory equipment, helps create and foster a spirit of commitment and dedication. While not directly visible to our clients, this is inherently beneficial in the form of providing our pathologists with optimum fixation and textbook quality stains, including a vast array of automated immunohistotechnical stains that enable our pathologists to make a more definitive diagnosis.

Centers of Excellence

Background

One of only a handful of pathologists in Texas with sub-specialty certification in Dermatopathology, Dr. Motaz Albahra also earned "sign-out" privileges, through his Fellowship at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, in the areas of Gastrointestinal and Liver Pathology. His experience adds a valuable dimension to skin and tissue evaluation at MPL.

Dermatopathology

Dr. Motaz Albahra, board certified in Dermatopathology and having worked at The Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, brings vast exposure and experience to the diagnosis of pigmented skin lesions, inflammatory dermatosis and skin tumors. Interpretation of skin pathology requires an in-depth knowledge of clinical dermatology that is an integral part of dermatopathology training.

Cytopathology

The strength and high standards of our Cytotechnologists and Cytopathologists led to the implementation, close to its inception, our increased utilization of the thin layered technology and its same sample ancillary testing for HPV, Chlamydia and Gonorrhea. While the benefits of this technology are well understood for Pap smears, we believe its application is equally important in the areas of bronchial washings, peritoneal and pericardial fluids and biliary drainage.

So highly regarded is our cytology program, that MPL was the first independent laboratory in the Southwestern United States, including California, to receive and place in operation the Cytyc TP-3000 Processor.

Always striving to remain responsive to the interests and concerns of the physicians we serve, MPL was also among the first laboratories to implement the Bethesda 2001 Pap reporting format changes.

Available cytology:

  • ThinPrep® Paps
  • SurePath™ Paps
  • HPV Testing
  • PCR Chlamydia & Gonorrhea Testing
  • Conventional Pap Testing
  • Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy
  • Non-Gyn Cytology
  • Immunohistochemistry on Fluids

Gastrointestinal and Liver Pathology

Dr. Albahra, a former consultant pathologist in the Liver and GI Pathology Branch at The Armed Forces Institute of Pathology specializes in interpretation of liver pathology. This specialty is a complex and demanding field which requires an in-depth knowledge of clinical pathology and the recognition of the multi-disciplinary nature of hepatology and gastroenterology. Additionally, the MPL team utilizes the Ishakk and Goodman Report Protocol for Chronic Hepatitis.

Gynecological Pathology

Our utilization of thin layered technology for cytology, with its same sample ancillary testing for HPV, Chlamydia and Gonorrhea, attracts a host of active and progressive Gynecologists seeking not just the technology but also our Cytopathology certification, high correlation statistics and overall experience for evaluation of the biopsies they generate.

Pulmonary Pathology

MPL provides pathology services to a varied list of Pulmonologists which generate a vast array of biopsies and fine needle aspirations and adds to our already extensive experience in the field. For idiopathic lung disease, MPL also consults with Dr. Tom Colby, the preeminent leader in the field, practicing at the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona. Fine Needle Aspirations require expertise in both disciplines of surgical pathology and cytopathology which our Pathologist provides.

Urological Pathology

Numerous prostate cases are seen daily at MPL with the majority of those being sextant biopsies. Results are summarized on our customized prostate patient report that includes a graphic template designed for better diagnostic reference.

Managed Care

Delivering the highest level of client service means more than processing vials and issuing reports. We are keenly aware that physicians have a choice in laboratories and that behind each of these activities is a patient waiting anxiously for diagnosis and the necessary treatment or follow-up care. Like you, we want to avoid placing any undue financial burden on the patient. Therefore, we strive to be a billing partner, keeping your office informed of our provider relationships and working closely with patients and providers, saving your office the burden of calls related to charges for our services.

MPL can accept and process specimens under all PPO's and other types of commercial insurance as well as most of the "fee for service" HMO plans. Unless a patient is covered under a "CAPPED" or "CAPITATED" HMO plan, you can feel comfortable sending any Pap or tissue specimen to MPL.

If you feel the need to verify the participation of our providers, please remember that we may be listed in one of several different ways: MPL, Inc., Medical & Pathology Lab, or under the name of our individual physician (Dr Albahra). If you have specific questions about insurances accepted in your area, or would like to request a prospective client proposal, please contact our Client Service Department.
